- Since its creation in 2018, SEED has brought many environmental activities and educational opportunities to the city of Pine Lake:
- Our first large project was to organize volunteers to plant a Monarch Waystation certified by Monarch Watch. We purchased plants with funds raised from a sale where neighbors donated plants from their own yards.
- SEED’s Plant Sales continue twice annually bringing together neighbors of all gardening skill levels.
- We’ve offered several programs as a part of our lecture series, including talks about flood mitigation, conflict wildlife, kudzu in the urban landscape, beekeeping, pesticide-free mosquito control, and edible wild plants.
- Every Spring, we partner with City of Pine Lake and the Municipal Arts Panel (MAP) to host a Pollination Celebration Festival. SEED sets up booths that educate the public about a variety of environmental topics.
- Each August SEED organizes the Great Southeastern Pollinator Census in Pine Lake. Our members train neighbors to be citizen scientists and helped to record accurate counts to UGA.
- SEED established a milkweed nursery near our eastern wetlands to provide habitat for butterfly and other pollinator species.
- SEED is responsible for establishing Pine Lake as an official Bee City USA and maintaining our annual certification renewal.
- SEED members created and installed signage regarding wildlife protection and non-littering around the lake as well as replacing the bird house on Turtle Island.
- In 2025 SEED moved from being a city initiative to now being part of Pine Lake Association of Involved Neighbors (PLAIN, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit .SEED events are usually announced via the Pine Lake News Blast, Facebook’s Pine Lake SEED page, and on our community bulletin boards.
